The Metaverse Media Lab is a research laboratory affiliated with the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Informatics, Degree Programs in Comprehensive Human Sciences, Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences, and the College of Media Arts, Science and Technology, School of Informatics, University of Tsukuba. The lab, headed by Takefumi Hiraki, conducts research across a broad range of fields, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), metaverse, haptic interfaces, and human–computer interaction (HCI).

Toward Metaverse Media with Embodiment, Spatiality, and Experience

The Metaverse Media Lab (Hiraki Lab) views the metaverse as comprising three core elements: platforms (spatiality), interfaces (embodiment), and content (experientiality). We explore metaverse environments that integrate all three of these elements, while researching and developing the underlying media technologies from both hardware and software perspectives. Through this work, we aim to create metaverse technologies that support people and enrich everyday life, toward a future in which people are freed from the constraints of physical bodies, space, and time.
